There is an established photographic culture on the Isle of Wight, with several camera/photography clubs; unfortunately photography club websites are scarce and not up to date in advertising events such as this. Continue Reading »

Annie Leibovitz On Wight

This week the famous American Photographer Annie Leibovitz was spotted on the Isle of Wight, when she visited Dimbola Lodge, the former home of Julia Margaret Cameron and where we hold our IWDIG meetings every week.

Annie Leibovitz (pictured), whose most famous cover photos often involve nudity, has established herself as an astute observer of American popular culture and has published seven books, including the uniquely personal, A Photographer’s Life 1990-2005, with photos of her close companion and mentor, author Susan Sontag.

Why would  the famous portrait photographer visit Dimbola Lodge?

Julia Margaret Cameron, the reputed first lady of British photography holds a special connection for Annie, as when she gave birth to her first child, she named her Sarah Cameron Leibovitz, in honor of the pioneering photographer. Continue Reading »

Photo History Set For Re-Write

New research into some of the world’s oldest photographs which reside at the National Media Museum in Bradford, has revealed a previously undiscovered method of image making dating to the 1820s.

Recent technical analysis by scientists from the Getty Conservation Institute in Los Angeles show three of the photographic plates created by the world’s first photographer, Joseph Nicéphore Niépce (pictured), demonstrate a range of different photographic experiments.

All the plates, from the Museum’s Royal Photographic Society Collection, were previously believed to have been created using the same method, however the ground-breaking research shows one of the plates illustrated Niépce’s skill in copying prints of the day and included deep etching, done by the photographer, to enhance the original image.
