‘All Island Picture Of The Year’ IWDIG Review

PeterLakeThe annual ”All Island Picture Of The Year’ took place at Binstead Community Centre on 11th November 2009.  This is  one competition in the photographic inter-club circuit on the Isle of Wight, where bragging rights are afforded to the individual photographer.

Once a year Island photographers take the plunge by submitting a maximum of 4 prints and if lucky enough to get on the winning podium, the credit belongs entirely to them and not for any club/group they belong to.

This is why we congratulate Peter Lake (pictured) who won the monochrome section and Gavin Chadwick who took home the cup as overall winner of this annual photography competition.

This monochrome win for Peter, who only took up photography within the last 18 months. was, made all the sweeter as he observed his interpretation of the competition brief and only submitted photographs that he took within the last year for consideration.

Although a relative newbie to photography Peter recently held an exhibition at the Lord Louis Library in Newport.

The ‘All Island Picture Of The Year’ event was well attended by about 60 photographers from six clubs, our number totalled 18.  The winning photographers deserved the bestowed titles.

It was refreshing to see many new photographs that obviously were taken within 2009.  However there were still some which given the title of the competition ‘Picture Of The Year’ in general consensus failed to pass muster in the WOW factor.  Some photographers clearly felt the need to submit prints that were taken several years ago.  Easily detected via glimpses of well worn campaign badges (on the back) and unfortunately as with previous competitions we have seen them all before.

Interesting to note John Riley as substitute Judge (a flu bug took out the original) has lost none of his charm. There was a very happy, warm atmosphere all the hopefuls waited and listened as John, produced a smooth informative often humorous flow of critique on the various photographs.

With grateful thanks to hosts Focus Ryde Imaging Group who provided their usual warm welcome and delicious cakes.

Disclaimer: The Isle of Wight Digital Imaging Group (IWDIG) is not competition based; we prefer to advance our photographic knowledge with a range of monthly photography tasks.  The IWDIG only attends two inter-club outings per year, which is mainly to give our members a taste and feel of the historical photographic genre.

Attending the ‘All Island Picture Of The Year’ allows our members/photographers the chance of triumph in a stand alone win.  Or in the annual Jessop’s Cup which we believe the win is earned on the merit of team work and being the only club/group which submits prints from 10 individual photographers.
