Voigtlander Bessa II

Voigtlander Bessa II

The Voigtlander Bessa II Color-Skopar 105mm Synchro-Compur shutter is simply the crème de la crème of folding cameras. A quality rangefinder camera with superb optics that exudes style. It usually sports either a Color-Skopar or Color-Heliar 105mm f/3.5 lens, more rarely the Apo-Lanthar lens. If you were fortunate enough to find one with the Apo-Lanthar lens it would cost you around the £1000 mark.

The rangefinder focusing is performed by turning a focus wheel with your left hand situated on the top-left of the camera. The complete lens-shutter assembly moves to focus in a similar manner to a view camera.

The Bessa II optics are first class, no matter whether it’s the 3 element Vaskar, 4 element Color-Skopar, 5 element Color-Heliar, or the 6 element APO-Lanthar. Shutters on the Bessa II are always either a Compur-Rapid or, the Synchro-Compur. The C-R shutter goes to 1/400th while the S-C goes to 1/500th sec. The other difference is that the S-C shutter has a switch to choose whether you’re using flash bulbs or electronic flash. The C-R is simply synched for whatever you attach to the PC post.

The Voigtlander Bessa II well deserves the reputaion it has gained. You get excellent build quality, built-in rangefinder and superb optics. If you are a collector or wish to use a great medium format camera, for the purpose it was designed for, then this could be the camera for you.
