Pinhole expert Eric Mitchell celebrated Worldwide Pinhole Photography Day by running a special introductory course at Dimbola Lodge today 27th April 2008. Several of the IWDIG photographers put down their DSLRs for the day and joined the others for this very interesting and informative look back in time to the origins of photography.

Eric got creative with Pinhole Photography and was more than able to help anyone that shared his interest to experiment with cake tins, baked bean cans and his own preferred medium beer cans. He also allowed the group to try out the latest in pinhole cameras specially imported from Japan and although a simple medium these cameras are quite sophisticated and create stunning images. 

Eric had a lot of interest this year’s course and some of the images will be scanned and placed on the Worldwide Pinhole Photography Day Website. www.pinholeday.org

The cost of joining Eric today was a mere £1 to cover materials, not as expensive as one might think for a once a year event and well recommended by everyone who attended. Eric is really pleased that there has been a renewed interest in the subject, but slightly disappointed that there seems to be so few enthusiasts willing to contribute to Worldwide Pinhole Day from the Isle of Wight.

Kevin Mitchell IWDIG photographer and first ever winner of the Isle of Wight Photographer of the Year Award was recently the subject of an Isle of Wight County Press Article by John Hannam. Isle of Wight Radio will broadcast the interview ‘Kevin Mitchell Meets John Hannam’ on Sunday 27th April. Kevin himself has major health problems but he is always actively involved campaigning for charities and in the theatre as both player and director and refuses to let his problems get in the way. Kevin will be taking time out from his photography for a while and is already preparing to direct the Apollo Theatre’s production of ‘Fiddler on the Roof’.

Although Kevin has already performed in several of the Apollo Player’s productions, on the Island, this will be Kevin’s first major role as director and he is very excited about the task ahead. 

Kevin’s production of Fiddler on the Roof can be seen at the Apollo Theatre, Newport, from Wednesday, July 2nd, until Saturday, July 12th 2008.

Whether you are a more traditional photographer and prefer slides, prints and using a wet darkroom or have decided to take the digital route they aim to promote photography to all skill levels. We wish them every success with this new online venture.

The BBC today invited members of the Isle of Wight Digital Imaging Group and Islanders to audition for a new series of the popular TV quiz show The Weakest Link hosted by Anne Robinson. Along with Island Pulse, the Island’s own news website, the IWDIG is pleased to be promoting these auditions which will be taking place in Portsmouth and would like to encourage as many Islanders as possible to apply.

BBC 1’s Weakest Link are currently working towards a new series and are looking for contestants in your area.  If you wish to be considered for an audition, then please apply as soon as possible for your chance to win up to £10,000.  Remember, anyone who applies has to be brave enough to face the ‘Queen of Mean’, Anne Robinson. Applicants must be 18 or over and should apply either by calling 0208 576 3824, or emailing Lucy.Baker@bbc.co.uk.       

Good luck to all of you brave enough to audition and we  would like to hear from any of you who are successful.

Although keen digital photographers, on this occasion, no photographic images were submitted for the competition.  Both Lucy and Colin enlisted the aid of software programs and their computer skills to create their images ranging in very diverse styles including computer graphics, anime and manga whilst Sandra relied purely on her artistic talents and traditional methods. 

All of the pictures and artwork shortlisted for this competition was of an exceptionally high standard and we would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Sandra, Colin and Lucy for their great achievement. It’s encouraging to see photographers expanding their skills into the art arena as we are sure that both of these disciplines compliment each other. 

Perhaps this is a lesson for all of us;  don’t just think of photography as a medium on its own, consider art and in turn it may well expand your photographic skills.

The IWDIG is registered with the Information Commissioner’s Office and to the best of our ability will protect any data that we hold relating to our members. The purpose of the Data Protection Act 1998 is to protect the rights and privacy of individuals and to ensure that data about them is processed only with their knowledge and consent. For this, the Act gives individuals certain rights regarding personal information held about them and places certain obligations in the form of eight principles on those who process the personal information. 

The Data Protection Act 1998 is enforced by the Office of the Information Commissioner an independent authority, who have powers to take action against any organisations whether registered or not that misuse information about you.  

Members will be able to view further information about our data protection committment in our revised Constitution, active since 19th December 2007, that will shortly be available in the members only area of this website. Members will also be able to download a copy of the IWDIG Child Protection Policy for their convenience.
